This year, we are focusing our faith formation on what it means to Know God, Know Neighbor, and Know Love. It is more than an academic pursuit. Our aim is to begin to embody and live out these ideals. We have already lifted up the study of our Holy Scripture regularly on Sunday mornings with the Café and Feasting on the Word. In 2017, we will be bringing in some well-respected and highly sought-after speakers to provide insights connected to our overall theme. They will be with us in a variety of ways: preaching, teaching, and offering special events. Their presence is an immense gift. Join us as we welcome them to St. John’s.
St. John’s Bible • March 1 (Ash Wednesday) through Lent
This beautiful Bible, completed in 2011, was hand-illuminated in the style of medieval manuscripts. We will use a Heritage edition (1 of 500) in Sunday worship during Lent. Director Tim Ternes will hold an informational forum on March 1 at 5pm before the Ash Wednesday service, and will lead a “visio divina” study at 10am on March 2.
Sam Wells • March 11-12
Renowned Anglican ethicist and theologian, the Rev. Dr. Sam Wells will present an all-day workshop Saturday, March 11 on “Living Without Enemies.” He will explore what it means to Live With the World in the midst of violence – the theological dimensions of solidarity, reconciliation, and life with our neighbor, our government, and the other. How can the church move from being & doing for others toward a stance of being with? Everyone is invited to join in this workshop on the theological, ethical, and pastoral dimensions of living with our neighbors in the midst of a violent world. Register at tinyurl.com/LWE2017. Cost is $10 at the door (cash or check). Contact Jered Weber-Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
The Rev. Dr. Sam Wells will also preach at 8am and 10am worship and lead a 9am faith formation forum on Sunday, Mar 12.
Fredrica Harris Thompsett • June 3-4 (Pentecost)
A church historian, author, professor, and a deeply talented preacher, Fredrica Harris Thompsett will be visiting to speak on baptismal living and the ministry of the baptized. She will lead an all-day workshop Saturday, June 3 entitled: “If not you, who? If not now, when? Living out our Baptismal Covenant.” She will also preach at 8am and 10am on June 4.
