Sunday, September 23rd at 4pm. Gregory Hand will perform the complete Gospel Preludes for organ. Based on familiar gospel tunes, such as What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Just As I Am, Jesus Loves Me, Shall We Gather at the River, and Amazing Grace, the pieces were composed by the great American composer William Bolcom (b. 1938) who is on the faculty at the University of Michigan. Dr. Hand is assistant professor of organ on the music faculty of the University of Iowa in Iowa City and holds a doctorate from the University of Michigan. He has presented recitals in the United States, France, Germany, Spain, and Brazil. His recent recording of the complete Gospel Preludes was recently released on the Naxos label. The recital will be co-sponsored by St. John’s and the Twin Cities Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. A free-will offering will be received to benefit the Organ Fund of St. John’s Church. A festive reception will follow the recital in the Fireside Room, to which all are invited. The church is handicap accessible from Kent Street.
