As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. – 1 Timothy 6:17-19
Dear Fellow Parishioner,
We at St. John’s are rich indeed. We are blessed with talented clergy and staff, inspiring music and worship, effective programs and outreach, and a beautiful building. All of this is made possible because of gifts of money and talent from the people of this parish, as well as the generosity of those who came before us.
Our endowment was created by financial gifts given by generations of parishioners like us who gave out of love of God, of neighbor, and of St. John’s.
Earnings from the endowment cover the costs of maintaining our building – a huge blessing given its size and age. The endowment has benefitted in recent years from new gifts and from recovery from the recession. Our pledge income has not shown the same growth. While our percentage of draw from the endowment hasn’t changed, in the past ten years the dollar amount of support from endowment has doubled, while the dollar amount of support from pledge has remained almost flat. We increasingly rely on the gifts of those no longer here to pay for not just the building, but for our ministries and staff.
Our goal as a parish is for the endowment to be reserved for expenses for the building. It is appropriate that we who attend St. John’s today give to support the services and ministries we use, and the church we love.
Each of us has treasure and talent to share. Will you join in pledging a tangible gift to St. John’s this year that shows your love for God, your neighbor, and our common life at St. John’s?
Yours in Christ,
